Supported Protection Types:

  • Workbook structure protection (prevents adding/deleting sheets)
  • Worksheet protection (prevents editing cells)
  • Protected ranges (allows editing specific areas)

Limitations:

  • Cannot remove file-level encryption (requires original password)
  • Some VBA macro protections may persist in .xlsm files
  • Advanced encryption algorithms may not be supported

Common Issues:

  • File appears corrupted: Try a different format or check file integrity
  • Processing failed: File may be encrypted or use unsupported protection
  • No protection found: File was already unprotected

What is Excel password protection?

Excel password protection is a feature in Microsoft Excel that restricts actions on a workbook, worksheet, or specific ranges. It comes in three layers: workbook structure protection (prevents adding, renaming, or deleting sheets), worksheet protection(prevents editing cells, formulas, or formatting), and protected ranges (allows editing only specific areas). These three are stored as flags inside the .xlsx file structure and can be removed by editing the file directly — no password recovery is required.

SimpleTool removes all three of these layers in your browser by editing the .xlsx ZIP structure directly. The work happens locally — your file never leaves your device. A separate, harder kind of protection is file-level encryption (the password prompt when you open the file), which uses AES encryption and cannot be bypassed without the original password. That one requires brute-force tooling and is honestly out of scope here — SimpleTool will detect it and tell you cleanly rather than pretend to crack it.

Supported Excel Formats

Our tool supports all major Excel formats with varying capabilities. Choose the format that matches your files for the best results.

When do you need to remove Excel password protection?

Real situations where you legitimately own the file and need access back. Use this tool only on workbooks you have the right to modify.

Inherited workbook from a departed colleague

A team member left and the spreadsheet they maintained is sheet-protected with a password no one wrote down. Finance, ops, HR, and project tracking workbooks fail this way constantly. Removing the protection restores ownership without rebuilding three years of formulas.

Recovering a forgotten own password

You password-protected your own workbook months ago and now can't remember the password. Sheet and workbook protection don't require recovery — they can simply be removed in-browser. File-level encryption (the open-password prompt) is the harder case and isn't covered here.

Stuck VBA / macro maintenance

A macro-enabled (.xlsm) workbook has worksheet protection blocking edits to cells that the macros need to reach. Removing the sheet password lets you maintain the macros without rewriting the protection layer separately.

HR & form templates

Performance review templates, leave-request forms, and audit checklists are routinely sheet-protected by the original author. When HR needs to update the template structure (add a new column, change a header), they need the protection off — temporarily or permanently.

M&A — integrating acquired-company files

After an acquisition, the buyer inherits hundreds of spreadsheets from the target. Many are sheet-protected by ex-staff. Bulk-removing the protections is step zero of any migration to a unified template or BI tool.

Audit & compliance review

External auditors need to inspect the formulas inside a protected sheet to verify the calculation logic (not just the cell outputs). Removing the protection gives full read-access without modifying business data.

Legacy archive migration

Decade-old workbooks pulled out of file archives — accounting closes, project archives, customer history — were often sheet-protected by long-departed authors. Removing the protection is required before importing into a new ERP, Snowflake, or Power BI dataset.

Decommissioning Excel for a SaaS replacement

Replacing an Excel-based process with a SaaS tool (Smartsheet, Airtable, Monday) requires extracting structured data from the source workbook. If the sheets are protected, automated extraction fails — removing protection makes the migration tractable.
