Frequently Asked Questions
Do my photos get uploaded to a server?
No. All image processing uses WebAssembly and JavaScript libraries running in your browser — RMBG-1.4 for background removal, Real-ESRGAN for upscaling, libheif for HEIC decoding, and Tesseract.js for OCR. Your photos never leave your device.
How does the AI background remover work without uploading?
SimpleTool loads the RMBG-1.4 AI model via Transformers.js into a Web Worker. The model runs on your GPU (WebGPU) or CPU (WebAssembly). Your photo is processed entirely in local browser RAM — no server connection is opened.
What is the maximum image size for the upscaler?
The upscaler works best with images under 5 MP (megapixels). Very large images may cause the browser tab to run out of memory. For best results, resize large photos first using the Image Resizer, then upscale.
Does HEIC conversion strip my photo metadata?
Yes — re-encoding through a browser canvas implicitly removes all EXIF, GPS, and IPTC metadata. This is a privacy benefit: location data, camera serial numbers, and timestamps are all dropped automatically.
Can I use these tools on my phone?
Yes. All tools are fully responsive and work on iOS Safari and Android Chrome. The AI background remover and upscaler are more memory-intensive and work best on recent devices.
