What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are short tracking tags appended to a URL so analytics platforms (Google Analytics 4, Plausible, Fathom, etc.) can tell you exactly where a visitor came from — which platform, campaign, and creative drove the click.
Which UTM parameters are required?
None are required by the technical spec, but Source, Medium, and Campaign are the three that produce meaningful reports. Term is only useful for paid search (to track which keyword triggered the ad), and Content is for A/B testing two versions of a link in the same campaign.
Does the order of UTM parameters matter?
No — analytics platforms read parameters by name, not position. The builder outputs them in the standard order (source → medium → campaign → term → content) for consistency and readability.
Should UTM values use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens are the common convention (e.g. "summer-sale" rather than "summer_sale"). Avoid spaces — they get encoded as %20 or + in the URL, which is ugly and occasionally breaks older link parsers.
Will UTM parameters hurt my SEO?
Not when used correctly. UTM parameters should only appear on external links pointing into your site (ads, emails, social posts). Never add UTM parameters to internal links — that resets session attribution in GA4 and inflates acquisition numbers.
Is this tool safe to use with production URLs?
