Select PDF Files for Local Processing

Drop multiple PDFs at once — files are processed entirely in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

What is PDF password protection?

PDF password protection comes in two distinct layers. The Owner Password restricts what you can do with an open PDF — printing, copying text, editing, filling forms — but does not require a password to open the file. The User Password (also called the open password) requires a password just to view the document, using AES encryption on the file contents.

SimpleTool handles both. Owner-Password-only restrictions are stripped instantly by re-saving the PDF without the permission flags. User- Password-encrypted files require you to enter the password — once entered, the decrypted PDF is re-saved without protection. Either way, the work happens in your browser using pdf-lib and QPDF compiled to WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device. We do not brute-force unknown passwords.

Your PDFs Never Leave Your Device

Unlike other online PDF tools, our password remover processes everything locally in your browser. Your sensitive documents are never uploaded to our servers or transmitted over the internet.

Local Processing

All restriction removal happens locally in your browser — files are not uploaded to our servers.

No Server Uploads

Your PDF is processed directly on your device, ensuring complete privacy.

Immediate Deletion

Files are automatically cleared from memory after processing completes.

Open Source Library

We use the well-audited pdf-lib library for transparent, trustworthy PDF manipulation.

When do you need to remove PDF password protection?

Real situations where you legitimately own the file and need full access back.

Printing your own bank or brokerage statements

Many banks email statements as PDFs with print and copy restrictions. To print a hard copy for filing, mortgage proof, or visa paperwork, those restrictions need to come off. The document is yours; printing it should not require opening a paid desktop PDF software license.

Tax forms & government PDFs

Some tax authorities and government agencies publish forms with edit restrictions that block typing into fillable fields, or print restrictions that limit the paper output. Removing the Owner Password lets you complete and submit forms without using vendor-specific filler apps.

Editing scanned contracts you authored

You scanned a contract years ago and saved it with restrictions for safekeeping. Now the counterparty wants a redacted version or a date correction. Removing the restrictions unlocks the file for editing in your preferred PDF editor (or our /redact-pdf and /annotate-pdf tools).

Extracting text for analysis or research

Academic papers, market research, and white papers are often published with copy restrictions. Researchers and analysts need to extract text for note-taking, summarisation, or feeding into reference managers — fair-use citation, not republication.

Forgotten own password

You password-protected an internal document months ago using only the Owner Password and forgot it. Since the Owner Password only blocks permissions (not opening), SimpleTool removes it without needing the original. If a User Password is set instead, you'll need to type it once.

Bulk-unlocking legacy archive

Migrating an old document archive (HR records, project deliverables, compliance files) to a new DMS or cloud drive. Hundreds of PDFs have Owner-Password restrictions that block automated indexing. Bulk-unlocking removes the barrier for indexing and search.

Repairing a vendor-locked PDF

An ebook, training manual, or proprietary report came from a vendor with restrictions that prevent annotation, highlighting, or printing — features you need for your own use of material you legitimately purchased. Removing the Owner Password restores normal reader functionality.

Combining restricted PDFs

Some PDF mergers refuse to combine files that have any restrictions set. To merge a 10-document closing packet or a multi-source report, the input PDFs need restrictions stripped first. After unlocking, our /merge-pdf tool combines them locally.

How SimpleTool Compares: PDF Password Remover Alternatives

What each option costs, what kind of password it removes, and what happens to your file along the way.

Comparison reflects publicly documented features as of mid-2026. Vendor terms change — verify on each provider's site before relying on a specific limit. “No (honest)” means we do not pretend to do brute-force password recovery in a browser, which would be ineffective on any modern PDF encryption.
