What is PDF password protection?
PDF password protection (also called PDF encryption) is the process of attaching an open password and/or permission restrictions to a PDF file. A protected PDF requires the password to open, and can additionally be restricted from printing, copying text, or editing β even after the password is entered. The current industry-standard algorithm is AES-256, the same encryption used by governments, banks, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
SimpleTool's PDF protector applies AES-256 encryption directly in your browser using the open-source QPDF WebAssembly build. No upload, no account, no file size limit beyond your device's RAM. The protected PDF opens in any standard reader β Adobe Acrobat, macOS Preview, Chrome, Firefox, mobile readers β without any vendor-locked viewer required.
How PDF Password Protection Works
We use the open-source QPDF engine (compiled to WebAssembly) to apply AES-256 encryption directly in your browser β the same standard used by Adobe Acrobat.
Drop Your PDFs
Select one or more PDF files from your device. Nothing is uploaded β files stay local.
Set Password & Permissions
Choose a password and configure what recipients can do: print, copy text, or edit the file.
Download Protected PDFs
Get AES-256 encrypted files ready to share securely. Download individually or as a .zip.
Your PDFs Never Leave Your Device
Unlike cloud tools (Adobe Acrobat Online, ilovepdf, Smallpdf), we never receive your files. Encryption runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly β the output is ready to download instantly.
AES-256 Encryption
Industry-standard encryption used by governments, banks, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
No Server Uploads
Files are encrypted locally in your browser RAM. We never see your documents.
Granular Permissions
Control whether recipients can print, copy text, or modify the document.
Bulk Processing
Protect multiple PDFs with the same password and permissions in one go.
When do you need to password-protect a PDF?
Concrete situations where AES-256 encryption on a PDF matters more than a generic cloud uploader.
Sensitive client docs over email
Contracts, NDAs, invoices, and financial reports that need to leave your domain. Recipients open with a password shared out-of-band (text message, phone call). Standard practice for client communications in legal, accounting, and consulting work.
GDPR / CCPA / data-privacy compliance
Sharing documents that contain customer PII (names, addresses, account numbers) over email risks GDPR/CCPA violation without encryption. A password-protected PDF turns an otherwise non-compliant email into an acceptable transfer when paired with out-of-band password delivery.
HIPAA-bound medical records
HIPAA mandates PHI be transmitted under encryption. A password-protected PDF over standard email satisfies the encryption requirement when TLS alone isn't enough β common for sharing lab results, discharge papers, and de-identified case notes between providers.
HR & personnel paperwork
Offer letters, performance reviews, termination paperwork, and background checks. None of these should sit unprotected in someone's inbox or on a shared drive. Password-protect before sending; archive the password separately.
Tax & financial documentation
Sending tax returns to accountants, brokerage statements to bankers, or pay stubs to landlords. Encrypt before email to protect against forwarded-inbox exposure, account-takeover replay, and long-term cloud retention by the recipient's email provider.
Legal β privileged & confidential
Discovery production, settlement drafts, expert reports, and any attorney-client-privileged material headed to external counsel or co-counsel. Encryption keeps inadvertent disclosure (wrong-recipient send) recoverable instead of catastrophic.
Print-protected master documents
Distribute training manuals, exam papers, course materials, or proprietary research with print and copy disabled. Recipients can read on-screen but cannot produce paper copies or extract text β useful for IP protection and licensing-controlled material.
Archive-at-rest encryption
Old tax records, signed contracts, IP filings, or estate documents stored on a cloud drive (Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive). At-rest password protection survives a future provider breach so the documents leak as encrypted blobs rather than plain text.
