Secure PDF Redactor β€” Permanently Delete Text from PDF

Permanently remove sensitive information from PDFs. Our hybrid engine flattens each page into a high-resolution image (destroying the data at pixel level), then re-injects a searchable text layer for non-redacted areas β€” all in your browser.

All redaction is done locally using pdf.js + pdf-lib. No server uploads, no AI training on your files.

Why Most β€œPDF Blackout” Tools Are Dangerous

Many popular β€œPDF redaction” tools simply draw a black rectangle on top of text without removing the underlying data. The text remains in the file β€” fully selectable, searchable, and copy-pasteable. Remove the overlay in any PDF editor and the sensitive information is instantly exposed.

Annotation Overlays

Tools that draw a black shape over text leave the original text object intact in the PDF stream. The "redaction" is purely cosmetic.

Flatten-Without-Destroy

Some tools flatten annotations but preserve the original PDF text layer underneath. The data survives flattening.

Cloud Redactors

Uploading confidential documents to a cloud service creates privacy exposure before redaction even begins β€” the document may be logged, cached, or retained.

What SimpleTool Does

We render each page to a 300 DPI canvas via pdf.js (destroying pixel data for redacted areas), then rebuild the PDF from the image. The original text layer never exists in the output.

How Our Hybrid Redaction Engine Works

A two-phase approach that permanently destroys sensitive data while keeping the rest of your document fully searchable.

PHASE 1

Pixel-Level Burn

pdf.js renders every page to a 300 DPI canvas. Redaction boxes are filled directly on the canvas pixels β€” the underlying data is overwritten and cannot be recovered from the image.

PHASE 2

Selective Text Preservation

We extract all text items and their bounding boxes. Items that overlap your redaction zones are discarded. Safe items are re-injected as an invisible text layer, keeping Ctrl+F search working.

PHASE 3

Clean PDF Output

pdf-lib assembles a new PDF with the high-quality JPEG background and the filtered text layer. Metadata is scrubbed. The output contains no trace of the redacted content.

Who needs to redact PDFs?

Real situations where a permanent, browser-only redaction tool matters more than a cosmetic black-box overlay.

Legal β€” discovery & contracts

Typically redacted

Attorney-client privileged passages, expert witness home addresses, third-party PII

Why permanent matters

Produced documents are scrutinized by opposing counsel. A surviving text layer under a black overlay is grounds for a motion to compel and may waive privilege.

Healthcare β€” HIPAA records

Typically redacted

Patient names, MRN, DOB, treatment specifics, provider identifiers

Why permanent matters

HIPAA de-identification requires that PHI be removed, not merely concealed. Pixel-level destruction satisfies the Safe Harbor method when sharing case studies, research datasets, or audit responses.

HR β€” sensitive personnel docs

Typically redacted

SSN, home address, salary figures, background check results, references

Why permanent matters

Internal sharing of offer letters, performance reviews, or background reports often needs partial redaction so a hiring manager sees role-relevant content without exposed PII.

Finance β€” proof-of-income & statements

Typically redacted

Account numbers, balances, SSN, transaction descriptions

Why permanent matters

Bank statements submitted for rental applications, visa filings, or loan paperwork need balances visible but account numbers and unrelated transactions hidden.

Job seekers β€” application materials

Typically redacted

SSN, DOB, prior-employer names in work samples, references

Why permanent matters

Portfolio work-samples or reference letters often contain identifying info that the next employer doesn't need β€” and that previous employers may have asked you to remove before sharing.

Journalism & whistleblower docs

Typically redacted

Source names, locations, contact details, identifying metadata

Why permanent matters

Published court records or leaked evidence routinely need source protection. A failed redaction (overlay-only) has historically exposed confidential sources when downloaded and inspected.

Government / FOIA responses

Typically redacted

Classified content, third-party PII, law-enforcement methods

Why permanent matters

Agency FOIA workflows require permanent text removal under exemptions (b)(6), (b)(7)(C), (b)(7)(E). Annotation overlays are explicitly insufficient under federal records guidance.

Researchers & academics

Typically redacted

Participant identifiers, location data, IRB-protected details

Why permanent matters

Sharing qualitative interview transcripts, case notes, or field photos for peer review requires the same de-identification standard as healthcare PHI.
