How to cut an MP3 online
- 1
Drop your MP3 file
Drag your MP3 (or WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, FLAC) into the tool, or click to select it from your device. The file stays in your browser โ nothing is uploaded.
- 2
Set start and end points
Drag the blue handles on the waveform timeline to set the section you want to keep. Or click the time display to type an exact timestamp in HH:MM:SS.s format.
- 3
Choose Fast or Precise mode
Fast mode trims instantly without re-encoding โ ideal for large files or when you want to preserve the original quality. Precise mode re-encodes for a frame-accurate cut.
- 4
Download the cut audio
Click Trim and download the result. The file is ready in seconds in Fast mode, or a few seconds longer in Precise mode.
Fast mode vs Precise mode โ which to use
โก Fast mode
- โ No re-encoding โ bitrate and quality unchanged
- โ Nearly instant, even for 200 MB files
- โ Keeps original format (MP3 in, MP3 out)
- โ ๏ธ Cut snaps to nearest audio frame (~26 ms)
Best for: removing intros/outros, extracting a song segment, cutting podcasts.
๐ฏ Precise mode
- โ Frame-accurate cut to the millisecond
- โ Output starts and ends exactly where you set
- โ ๏ธ Re-encodes to MP3 (one generation of quality loss)
- โ ๏ธ Takes a few seconds longer
Best for: music editing where exact timing matters, ringtones, audio sync.
Common reasons to cut an MP3
- Remove a long intro or outro from a podcast episode
- Extract a specific song from a DJ mix or live recording
- Trim silence from the beginning or end of a voice memo
- Create a ringtone from the chorus of a song
- Cut a highlight clip from an interview or lecture
- Shorten an audio file before attaching it to an email
Why "no re-encoding" matters for audio quality
MP3 is a lossy format โ every time you re-encode an MP3, you lose a small amount of quality. If you cut an MP3, re-encode it to MP3, then someone else cuts it and re-encodes again, the quality degrades each generation. Fast mode avoids this by copying the audio bitstream directly โ the bytes are moved, not decoded and re-compressed. The output file is bit-for-bit identical to the original within the cut region. Use Fast mode whenever exact timing is not critical (within ~26 ms).
Frequently asked questions
Does cutting an MP3 reduce audio quality?
In Fast mode: no. Fast mode uses stream copy โ it slices the audio without re-encoding, so bitrate, stereo channels, and audio quality are completely unchanged from the original. Precise mode re-encodes to produce a frame-accurate cut, which means one generation of re-encoding. For most listeners this is inaudible, but if you plan to re-encode again later, Fast mode is the better choice.
What is the difference between Fast and Precise mode?
Fast mode copies the audio stream without decoding it, making it nearly instant for any file size. The cut point snaps to the nearest audio frame โ for MP3 this is typically within 26 ms of your chosen time. Precise mode re-encodes the output, so the cut is exactly where you set it, but takes a few seconds longer.
What audio formats are supported?
MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, and FLAC. Fast mode outputs the same format as the input. Precise mode always outputs MP3. If you need to cut a WAV or FLAC and keep the original format, use Fast mode.
Is my audio file uploaded to a server?
No. The tool runs FFmpeg WebAssembly directly in your browser tab. Your audio file never leaves your device โ there are no network requests during processing. This applies even for large files.
Is there a file size limit?
No enforced limit. FFmpeg WASM processes the file in your browser memory. Very large files (>500 MB) may be slow depending on your device, but typical MP3 files (up to 100โ200 MB) process reliably. Fast mode is the most memory-efficient option for large files.
Can I set the cut point to the exact millisecond?
Yes. Click the start or end time display to edit it manually in HH:MM:SS.s format (e.g. 00:01:23.5 for 1 minute, 23.5 seconds). In Precise mode the cut is made at the exact time you specify. In Fast mode the cut snaps to the nearest audio frame (~26 ms for a standard 128 kbps MP3).
