Page numbers are added as new text content drawn at the PDF coordinate level — not as an image overlay — so they remain selectable and searchable in the output file.
The font is Helvetica, one of the 14 standard fonts embedded in every PDF reader. This means the output file remains lightweight — no font data is embedded. The numbering is drawn at the exact margin you specify in PDF points (1 point = 1/72 inch), so a 20 pt margin places numbers about 7 mm from the page edge — well within the printable area of standard printers.
